How to FIX the pdf files generated from postscript files which were
made with latex etc long time ago ?

Dear Friends, Many years ago I had a few files that were downloaded
from the internet. I think they were pdf files made using ps files
which in turn were from some dvips type utility and that came from
dvi ....

Those pdf files showed very dim or bad fonts, although they printed
well.

I remember someone sent me a method to fix it.

I vaguely remember that it involved some kind of ghostscript or gs
based line.

Would any of you, experienced people, be able to give me some idea on
the fix ?

I am now guessing that there were some old fonts which showed very
thin on monitor at that time but printed well.

I appreciate any help.
George

Hmmmm....I don't know if either of those works on PDF files. I think
they may require the original dvips-produced PostScript.

If this is what I think you're referring to (blurry display of some
fonts), then it was [is] not an error in the PDF files, or in the
PostScript, or even in the DVI. This was the result of some very poor
quality code in Acrobat Reader attempting to render Type 3 bitmap fonts.
If you open these PDF files in a different reader (eg xpdf, which uses a
different rendering engine) they look fine. Open them in a modern
version of Acrobat Reader and they should look much better.

Can you put one of them online so we can see?

The only way I know to fix it is to regenerate the document using
non-bitmap fonts, which is not always possible (several very useful
fonts are still only available as Type 3 bitmaps). But it is quite
possible that someone came up with a method to do something to the
fontlib using PostScript.
