permanently unlocking a PDF (removing a known password)

Date:Thu, 18 Dec 2008 16:15:06 +0100

I've got a couple of protected PDFs to which I know the password,
i.e. I _don't_ have to break it. I just want to remove the
password permanently from the PDFs, so that I can process the
files within scripts.

Which program can I use to do this?

You can use Adobe Acrobat.

There is no Acrobat version for Unix.

This is both untrue and unhelpful.

Adobe Reader for unix continues to be supported:
http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=10&platform=unix

Acrobat Exchange for unix existed until version 3.0 at least.
Support downloads still exist:
http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=ace&platform=unix

But Wolfgang wasn't asking for Acrobat for Unix. He was asking if
Acrobat (on any plaform) is scriptable from a Unix **style** command
line. For this, the actual answer is no, unfortunately. Acrobat
Reader in older versions could be told to output Postscript for a
PDF, but now even this has vanished.

Our PLOP product does this in a scriptable/batchable way on
all platforms. Free evaluation version on our Web site.

PDF Meld can remove them - use the command line option -pwdlist
"password" where "password" is the owner password.

You can also do all sorts of batch processing on the PDFs with the
program and, if you like, re-assign passwords when you're done.

E.g. our Advanced PDF Password Recovery (Standard edition):

http://www.elcomsoft.com/apdfpr.html

It can decrypt any PDF file even if yoiu know 'owner' password only
(though the file also has the 'open' password set, and it is different.

Hi,

You can use Gnostice's PDFOne Java which is a java based PDF creation
and manipulation library that will allow you to remove the encryption
permanently if you know the owner password. Since it is java based you
can use it on any platform. You can write a simple program which will
accept pdf file path and password as command line arguments and
execute it on any platform. If you need further assistance you can
send your queries to support@gnostice.com.
